שמואל א' טו:ט: ויחמל שאול והעם על אגג ועל מיטב הצאן והבקר והמשנים ועל הכרים ועל כל הטוב וגו':
Shemuel I (I Samuel) 15:9: "Shaul (Saul) and the people had mercy on Agag and on the best of the sheep and the cattle and the healthy [animals] and the fattened [animals] (karim) and on all of the good…"
My translation here of the word "karim – כרים" as "fattened" is based on the Targum which translates the word as "patimaya – פטימיא," the Aramaic equivalent of the Hebrew word "mephutamim – מפוטמים," meaning "stuffed." However, with the addition of the letter "vav – ו'," meaning "and," in front of the word פטימיא, the "p" sound of the letter פ' becomes softened to a "ph" sound and the pronunciation of the word becomes "uphatimaya." Upon reading this word it occurred to me that perhaps the English word "fat" is derived from this Hebrew/Aramaic word.
