B'Midbar (Numbers) 33:50-56: "HaShem (G-d) spoke to Mosheh (Moses) . . . saying, 'Speak to the Children of Israel and say to them, 'When you cross the Jordan [River] toward the land of Kenaan (Canaan), you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land before you . . . and you shall dwell therein, for I have given the land to you, to inherit it. But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, those of them that you allow to remain will be spikes in your eyes thorns in your sides, and they will persecute you upon the land in which you dwell. And that which I had intended to do to them I will do to you."
